Program Assistant

Are you 12 years old by December 31, 2018 and would you like to help our younger skaters learn how to skate?

Become a Program Assistant and help our professional coaches teach younger skaters in the Parent/Tot and Preschool CanSkate programs. Program Assistants have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and assist in the skill development of young skaters.

Are you a high school student looking for ways to earn your 40 volunteer hours?

STARSkate skaters have the opportunity to complete their community service hours for their high school curriculum as Program Assistants (P.A’S) in our Learn to Skate Program. If you choose to use your hours to complete the required "High School Volunteer Hours" the club will give you a letter at the end of the year indicating the number of hours that you have volunteered for the Georgetown Skating Club as a program assistant.

Each P.A. will receive a P.A. jacket to identify them on our recreational skating sessions. This P.A. jacket must be returned at the end of the season to receive your volunteer hours.

Program Assistant Subsidy Policy
The majority of the costs of running a skating club are the high fees for ice rental. The number of skaters on the StarSkate sessions are too few to cover ice costs so those programs are run at a loss. Without the subsidization from the CanSkate income, we would not be able to run the StarSkate program. In appreciation of this subsidization, we request that each StarSkater over age of 12 donate a minimum of one hour per week (total 20 hours per year) to the CanSkate program as a program Assistant. Our Program Assistants are valuable members of our coaching staff and make the PreCanSkate and CanSkate session safer and more enjoyable for all the coaches and skaters. Many of our Program Assistants go on to train and become professional coaches themselves. Program Assisting qualifies for high school volunteer hours and a letter of participation is prepared for each coaching assistant at the end of each season to present to their high school guidance offices.

In support of our Program Assistant policy, effective September 2015 a buyout option will be available for skaters (ages 12+) who can not to participate as a PA during regular season. The buyout fee is $100.

Program Assistant Training is scheduled for Wednesday, September 19, 2018 time TBD.  All PA's must attend.
